Dante Basco Participates In The Nation's Largest Weekly Open Mic, Da’ Poetry Lounge 10 Year Anniversary
“Our society will fall when our words do not lift us; when our voice has no worth, then neither do we.”
Begun in 1998, this exciting, standing room only performance space is now the largest weekly open mic event in the country, bringing together audiences which cross all ethnic and age boundaries, and providing an important forum for personal expression without criticism or judgment. Over the course of it’s existence Da’ Poetry Lounge became one of the inspirations for the Peabody Award Winning HBO series Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry(in which one of the hosts serves as Talent Coordinator) as well as a driving force in the resurgence of the spoken word movement. Once a month, Da’ Lounge also holds "slams", or competitions, for the opportunity to compete on the Hollywood Slam team both regionally and nationally (2004 National Champions).
With a musical landscape provided by Brutha Gimel and internationally recognized poets Shihan Van Clief and Devin ‘Poetri ‘Smith hosting each Tuesday night, The Greenway Court Theater(Home to DPL for the past 8 years) is packed with passionate writers/performers anxiously awaiting their chance to tell their story on the coveted mic to the on looking avid listeners and lovers of poetry. Da’ Poetry Lounge has also served to be the alternative place for the youth to hang out instead of the streets. Built on the grounds of Fairfax High School don’t be surprised to see a student or two or thirty in the audience getting their poetry fix.
Da Poetry Lounge is held every Tuesday evening from 845pm to 12midnite. Admission is free on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays with the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays charging $5 at the door. Parking is free. DPL is located at 544 N. Fairfax Ave inside The Greenway Court Theater.
