"Autism: The Musical" follows a few months in the life of the Miracle Project, a Los Angeles theatrical program designed for autistic children. The amazing documentary film aired on HBO on March 25th and has received great reviews in the both the LA and New York Times, along with many other acclaimed critics. The film follows the fluctuating struggle of five autistic children as they learn to bridge over their quirks in order to work together in harmony on a theatrical production. What makes this film stand out is that it weaves the stories of the parents into the central plot as they experience the frustrating, exasperating, but ultimately rewarding effects of raising an autistic child. The camera records as the parents go through their own drama: an affair; a divorce; a bout with depression, along with the tedious day-to-day tasks of dealing with school systems and social ostracizing.
